Where a smiling face and warm embrace will greet you!
“No
Man is an Island, No man stands alone.
Each
man’s joy is joy to me. Each
man’s grief is my own.
We
need one another, so I will defend, Each man as my brother, each man as my friend.”
B urns, Carol cb@ironwoodfilms.org Ironwood Films is an independent, indigenous media organization that serves native and non-native communities through the production of progressive documentary-style motion pictures that are provocative and proactive. Our primary mission is to explore and promote tribal and cultural issues that impact, and are related to, tribal self-determination, and that examine contemporary native topics in the context of today's society. Currently in production: MNI SOSE (aka Missouri River) 28 Missouri River basin tribes signed treaties with the United States in the late 1900's; this story examines the results of those agreements today in terms of cultural resources and ancestral homelands that are being exploited through the special interests of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Exploitation of the river resources and failure to communicate with tribal nations devastated tribal autonomy; in addition to lands lost through the congressional movement of tribal boundaries, millions of acres washed away as reservoir levels were raised and lowered to boost power for cities. The riverbank erosion exposes ancestral burials and other culturally sensitive areas. With the anticipated amount of increased river economy to come, these sites are at peril. Other questions regarding water quantification, shoreline stabilization, the loss of natural habitat and the endangerment of a variety of plant and animal species is further cause for public concern. To protect these resources from desecration and destruction it is important these topics are brought to the public eye. This film works to re-educate audiences about what is really happening on the domestic front and, what can be done individually, to help. Ironwood Films serves native and non-native populations by presenting indigenous educational television programming of national regional topics through public mainstream media outlets. The primary mission of Ironwood is to explore and promote tribal and cultural issues related to self-determination through educational video and film.
